Carl XVI Gustaf, the King of SwedenSweden emerged as an independent and unified country during the Middle Ages. In the 17th century, the country expanded its territories to form the Swedish Empire. The empire grew to be one of the great powers of Europe in the 17th and early 18th century. Most of the conquered territories outside the Scandinavian Peninsula were lost during the 18th and 19th centuries. The eastern half of Sweden, present-day Finland, was lost to Russia in 1809. The last war in which Sweden was directly involved was in 1814, when Sweden by military means forced Norway into a personal union. Since then, Sweden has been at peace, adopting a non-aligned foreign policy in peacetime and neutrality in wartime. Sweden has been a member of the European Union since 1 January 1995 and is a member of the OECD.

Today, Sweden is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary democracy of government and a highly developed economy. An industrial and technological leader in several fields, Sweden had the fastest economic growth the highest innovation, and the most competitive economy in the European Union in 2010. Having had one of the world's highest standards of living for hundreds of years, the country is known for its tolerant, secular and egalitarian society.

Sweden has one of the most highly developed welfare states in the world. The country has a higher level of social spending to GDP than any other nation. Additionally it provides equal as well as comprehensive access to education and health care.

midnight skiing SwedenFrom midnight skiing to summer island bathing, ancient culture to modern innovation...
Where can you hop on a snow scooter or a dog sledge and explore white wastelands? Where can you see relics of the Viking era and the Bronze Age? And where can you ski, take rides on Icelandic ponies, and stay in beautiful, exciting cities? Only in Sweden...

Occupying an area of 450,000 square kilometres and home to 8.9 million people, Sweden is the largest of the Scandinavian countries. Glacial activity has formed much of the country’s landscape. Early life in Sweden is documented in the rock paintings (hallristningar) that survive in certain areas. The many Roman, Byzantine and Arab coins left in Sweden bear testament to the wealth and power that Swedish Vikings accumulated during the Viking age. Famous Swedes include the influential dramatist and author Strindberg and the famous children’s writer Astrid Lindgren, creator of Pippi Longstocking. Another famous Swede was the 19th century chemist and engineer Alfred Nobel who became the first patron of the Nobel Institute and the coveted international prizes.

Kungsberget ski centers SwedenCobbled streets, museums, splendid palaces, lively nightlife...
Sweden’s capital city, Stockholm, is a city of great natural beauty. It is situated on a magnificent archipelago of 24,000 islands. It possesses the world’s first national park enclosed within city limits. It is a city steeped in tradition and history with narrow passageways, cobbled streets, museums, splendid palaces, lively nightlife and many fine restaurants. Gothenburg, the country’s second city, boasts a beautiful harbour and Liseberg, one of the world’s best amusement parks.

Downhill and cross-country skiing are popular sports in Sweden. There are ski centers in Vastmanland and Stockholm. Hiking, canoeing, orienteering and diving opportunities abound. The spectacular Northern Lights or the aurora borealis can be seen in the north of the country. The aurora borealis are a natural phenomenon characterized by the appearance of streamers of coloured light in the sky caused by the interaction of charged particles from the sun with atoms in the upper atmosphere. Sample some Swedish aquavit and pickled herring to complete your Swedish experience.
