Roskilde Viking Ship Museum and the Museum Island for groups The
Roskilde Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde is the Danish museum for ships, seafaring and boatbuilding culture in ancient and medieval times. The Viking Ship Hall, the oldest part of the museum, was designed by Erik Christian Sørensen and built as a big display case around the five viking ships from Skuldelev.

Viking Ship Museum was opened in 1969 and preserved in 1997.
The late modern building is a particularly successful example of one of the contemporary international styles - the Japanese architecture and the minimalistic and straight "brutality".

Roskilde Viking Ship Museum was extended by the Museum Island designed by Henrik Terkelsen, Tegnestuen Hou + Partnere. The area consists of 8 buildings with very different functions, e.g.: The shipyard of
Roskilde Viking Ship museum where reconstructions of the viking ships and traditional Nordic wooden ships are build, and the Activity House where adults and children can try out their skills on the handicrafts of the Viking Age.
Roskilde Domkirke Roskilde Cathedral Roskilde Domkirke
 Roskilde Domkirke (Roskilde Cathedral) is located in the very centre of Roskilde, on the spot where there has been a church for more than thousand years. The first church was a wooden church built by King Harald Blaatand (Bluetooth) in the 10th century - and around 1170, Bishop Absalon began the erection of the actual church. It was considered finished around 1280, but since then each century has added its own extensions in various styles.

cathedral is built of more than 3,000,000 red bricks. Quite impressive, but the façade is not as richly decorated as many other cathedrals I have visited around the world. However, inside
Roskilde cathedral is incredibly beautiful. The wonderful three-sided altar piece from 1560, the pulpit (which was a gift of King Christian IV in 1610), and the choir with the magnificent sarcophagus of Queen Margrethe I and a few other Royal tombs. Since the Reformation,
Roskilde cathedral was designated as the Royal burial place (but has never hosted a coronation or a Royal wedding) and all Danish Kings - and almost all Queens - have been buried in Roskilde Cathedral. Many of them in special Royal Sepulchral Chapels and especially King Christian IV’s Chapel is very beautiful with its decorated walls and ceiling. No doubt it is one of Denmark’s most outstanding churches and is an absolute must see in Roskilde. In 1995,
Roskilde Cathedral was added to UNESCO's list of the world's most precious cultural assets. Roskilde Cathedral is a parish church and it might be closed to visitors due to services or religious ceremonies. Check
